Mateu Alemany, new Director of Men's Professional Football
Carlos Bucero brings on board the Balearic director, who has had a profound, extensive career at different LALIGA clubs.
Mateu Alemany joins Atlético de Madrid as the new Director of Men's Professional Football. He will be part of the team run by Carlos Bucero, the General Director of Football, leading on all matters relevant to the men's first team and Atlético Madrileño, as well as the professional affairs of the Academy.
Mateu Alemany is a qualified lawyer and has had a long and renowned career in Spanish football, occupying various positions at different LALIGA clubs.
He started his career in the footballing world at Real Mallorca in 1990, taking on different roles until he became the President in September 2000, a position he held for five years. With Alemany as General Director, Real Mallorca won the Supercopa de España (1998) and played in the finals of the Copa 1997-98 and the Recopa de Europa 1998-99. Additionally, they achieved their best-ever placement in LALIGA (third in the 1998-99 season) and qualified for the Champions League for the first time. In 2003, during Alemany's presidency of Real Mallorca, the team achieved their biggest sporting success when they won the Copa del Rey.
Alemany later returned to Real Mallorca as the president in a second stint in 2009.
In 2017, he assumed the position of General Director at Valencia CF, where he stayed for two-and-a-half years. During his tenure at the club, the Valencians won the 2019 Copa del Rey.
In March 2021, he became FC Barcelona's Director of Professional Football, a post he held until the beginning of September 2023. During his time at the club, FC Barcelona won one LALIGA (2022/23), one Copa del Rey (2021) and one Supercopa de España (2023).
Mateu Alemany starts in his new position this very morning, visiting the first team at the Majadahonda Sports Centre alongside Carlos Bucero. Both have held meetings with Diego Simeone and have also met the players training in Madrid.
