Late Vitolo header fires Atleti to key home win

Our team beat Valladolid 1-0 on Saturday night in the first game at the Wanda Metropolitano in over three months.

Atleti earned a key 1-0 win over Valladolid on Saturday thanks to a late goal from Vitolo.

The match, which was the first to be played in over three months at the Wanda Metropolitano, was preceded by several tributes to club legends, members and supporters who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our team started the game very well, collecting a few good chances. Joao Félix was very active and had several attempts, but the biggest chance was Morata’s as he headed the ball just wide just six minutes into the clash. The away side started to feel more comfortable as the game progressed and they were close to taking the lead through Matheus, who struck wide.

Simeone made all five substitutions throughout the second half as Carrasco, Koke, Costa, Correa and Vitolo came on for Herrera, Lemar, Joao Félix, Morata and Llorente. The fresh legs provided extra energy, but we struggled to break down Valladolid’s tight defence… Until super sub Vitolo, with 10 minutes to go, headed the ball just over the line to earn Atleti three key points in our return to the Wanda Metropolitano.
