José María Giménez renews until 2028
The Uruguayan, who arrived at our club in April 2013, will continue to defend the Red & White shirt after the renewal agreement that both parties reached in September was formalised this Friday.
José María Giménez has extended his contract with our club until 2028. The 28-year-old Uruguayan player has extended his commitment for three seasons and will continue to wear the Red & White shirt for the next five seasons. Accompanied by our CEO, Miguel Ángel Gil, the player signed his new contract in the offices of the Cívitas Metropolitano, thus formalising today the renewal agreement reached in September.
In April 2013 and at just 18 years of age, the Uruguayan centre-back joined the club and five months later, on 14 September, he made his debut in the 4-2 win against Almería. In that campaign, he was part of the 2013/14 league championship win, while continuing to develop at the highest level.
In the following seasons he continued to gain prominence and his grit and character not only made him an idol in the stands, but also a key defensive player both in our team and in the Uruguayan national team. A member of the quartet of captains since the 19/20 campaign, to date he has won not only the aforementioned 2013/14 League but also the 2014 Spanish Super Cup, the 2017/18 Europa League, the 2018 European Super Cup and the 2020/21 League, and today he continues to write his Red & White history, accumulating a total of 290 appearances in the Atlético de Madrid jersey.
Congratulations, Josema!
