José Antonio Reyes: “I’m in one of the best moments of my athletic career”

“Quique’s confidence in me has been fundamental”

José Antonio Reyes was news because of his contract extension and for the excellent form with which he’s begun the 10-11 season. The winger from Sevilla began the official season in the best way possible, scoring the opening goal in the European SuperCup and thus opening the doors for the second title he’s won with Atlético de Madrid.

Not in vain, during the question and answer session held after his contract extension presentation, the first was regarding the national team, and whether he feels that he’s at the level demanded by it. “It’s not my decision, but rather that of the national team head coach. Obviously I’d have liked for them to call me up. I think that the way I’m playing right now, I’m at that level, but I’ll repeat that it’s up to the manager.”

Since he arrived, he’s had to win over the support of the fans due to having played at Real Madrid. “I had to change the fans’ attitude as the games went on. The past is the past and the present is what matters, which is that the supporters are on my side and back me.”

The winger is the player who is fouled the most in La Liga. Concerning whether he feels protected, he responded “I don’t know. The referees have to protect everyone equally. It’s true that I’m one of the players who’s been kicked the most and in the end I get the red card. I have to learn from these circumstances so that it doesn’t happen again.”

To wrap things up, Reyes acknowledged that he’s in a sweet moment in his career path. This is one of the best times in my athletic career. Right now, I’m at a level where I hadn’t been for a while. The confidence placed in me by Quique Sánchez Flores has been fundamental”.
