Javier Aguirre: “We lost, but could have drawn or even won the match”

“I told the players that we’re on the right path”

The manager of Real Zaragoza, Javier Aguirre, highlighted after the match th“they were better than us in the first half, although didn’t have many chances, but in the second we put ourselves back together and the match became very competitive. Football gives and takes away. We’ve now had three games in a row in which we haven’t received the prize that we deserve. But I told my players to stay calm: we lost, but we were walking along the right line and are on the right path.”

With respect to his players’ moods after the loss, the Mexican manager commented that “they’re like they were last week or 15 days ago. They gave their all, did what I asked of them and were dedicated, but left empty. But they’re leaving with the feeling that, even though they lost, they could have drawn or won. The only real thing about this match is the result. But, I insist, if we keep playing like this on the pitch, we can remain calm. We’ll have a tough time sleeping, but tomorrow we’ll see the other side of the coin.”

The fact is that Zaragoza has gone from having a negative run to a positive one. “It’s true that as regards results we’re fine, but not regarding play; there we’re taking steps backwards. I wish we were more consistent concerning results, but if we stay along this line of work and turn up the intensity for 80 or 90 minutes, we’re going to move upwards. Time is running out, it’s true, but we’re alive.”
