Jan Oblak signs contract extension until 2023
The Slovenian, who arrived at our club in 2014, has renewed his contract with our club until June 30, 2023.
Jan Oblak has signed a contract extension with Atlético de Madrid until June 30, 2023. The goalkeeper has already signed his new contract for the following four seasons.
The Slovenian said he was very happy to continue wearing the Red & White shirt.
“I'm very happy to have signed a contract extension and to be here. I'm going to defend these colours to the best of my abilities and continue working hard,” Oblak said.
The 26-year-old arrived at our club in 2014. Almost five years later, he’s widely considered as one of the world’s top goalkeepers thanks to his hard work, commitment and talent. In March 2015, the Slovenian became a starter after completing his first outstanding performance during the return leg of the Champions League Last 16 against Bayer Leverkusen. The keeper saved a penalty during the shootout, helping our team qualify for the next round.
Many other extraordinary performances followed, such as the penalty save against Bayern Munich in the 2015-16 Champions League semi-finals, the triple save against Bayer Leverkusen’s strikers in the 2016-17 season and the incredible stretch to deny Ramsey’s header in the 2017-18 Europa League against Arsenal.
Oblak so far has played 203 games at Atleti, keeping 115 clean sheets in the process (56.6%). These extraordinary numbers have earned the Slovenian the last three Zamora Trophies, thus becoming the first goalkeeper in our club’s history to do so.
The 26-year-old has won one Spanish Super Cup (2014), one Europa League (2017-18) and one UEFA Super Cup (2018), as well as many individual awards. Oblak made the UEFA Champions League Team of the Year in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons and was named Slovenian Player of the Year in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
At just 26 years of age, he is already the fifth most-capped goalkeeper in our club’s history, behind legends Reina (213), Madinabeytia (236), Molina (248) and Abel Resino (303). The latter recently presented Oblak with a commemorative plaque for his 200 Atleti matches.
The agreement certainly is great news for the Atleti Family, as we ensure the continuity of one of the world's finest goalkeepers.
