Atlético de Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement over the transfer of Ivan Saponjic. The Serbian has already signed a three-year deal and passed his medical at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra. He has already joined Simeone’s squad in Los Ángeles de San Rafael with the permission of the Portuguese club.
Saponjic was born on Aug. 2, 1997 in Nova Varos, Serbia. He is strong in the air thanks to his height (192 cm) and is a prolific goalscorer. At 21, striker has already won the U20 World Cup. He did so in 2015, playing every game and netting two goals, including the semi-final winner against Mali.
The Serbian began his career at Partizan Belgrade, where he played Champions League qualifiers and the Europa League. He then signed with Benfica and played the 2017/18 season on loan at Belgian side Zulte Waregem, where he scored seven goals in 39 matches. After his loan spell, the striker returned to Benfica, netting six goals in 28 games for their youth team last season.
Saponjic is our sixth summer signing, after Marcos Llorente, Héctor Herrera, Felipe, João Félix and Lodi.
