Godín: “We need the goals of Diego Forlán and Kun Agüero'

'Villarreal is a good team and tough to beat'

Diego Godín is aware that the team isn’t offering up its best version. He knows that the match against Getafe wasn’t good, but is confident of improving against his former team, Villarreal. “With respect to our aspirations, the draw wasn’t enough. But given the way the match developed, we earned a point. We began by losing early, and even though we didn’t have great chances, I think that we dominated the game,” he stated.

The Uruguayan defender couldn’t find an explanation for the team’s inconsistent season. “I don’t know the reasons. Conceding a goal just minutes into the contest didn’t enter our plans. Honestly, I believe that we could have done something more, but we didn’t create scoring chances,” he asserted.

Regarding the current form of Diego Forlán and his situation within the squad, Godín explained thata goal-scorer lives off of goals. So far this season he hasn’t had that scoring streak that boosts your confidence. He looks for the goal, but hasn’t been lucky. There’s no bad relationship between him and the rest of the squad; if anything, it’s the opposite. He hasn’t fought with any of his teammates. People not passing him the ball is a coincidence, it’s not done on purpose. Those are things that don’t even pass through my head, or those of my teammates. I don’t want to believe that it’s true, and I don’t think that these things happen in a football team.”

Atlético de Madrid isn’t having the best of fortune in finishing off their attacks. Godín believes that “in what’s gone of the season, the lack of finishing in front of the goal from Kun and Forlán is noticeable. They’re not putting in as many goals as last season. We need the goals of Forlán and Agüero because they’re the ones who make the difference and the ones who move the team forward.

“Our goal of making it to Champions League is difficult, but we can still qualify for the Europa League. We’re only thinking about winning and playing as well as possible against Villarreal, about having a good game like we did against Sevilla and taking the points away from them. We know that they’re a good side that’s tough to beat. I know them well, but you don’t need to know them. We’ve all seen Villarreal and we know how they play. It’s going to be an extremely tough match. The gaffer hasn’t asked me anything about Villarreal, he knows them more than well enough,”
he assured.

To finish, he analyzed his current form and said thatI feel good, although the problem is the team; we just can’t seem to close out games.”
