Godín: “Our attitude will take us to Europe at the end of the season”

“We’re convinced that we’re on the right path”

Diego Godín wasn’t satisfied, like the rest of his teammates, with the draw earned against Espanyol. The ‘rojiblanco’ team was better than its opponent, but unable to maintain the lead that they had twice during the game. “It was a bit of a strange game. We feel like we lost two points because we were ahead on the scoreboard twice and, beyond that, we felt good. The truth is that at times we played good football and had the match under control. We’ll have to make this point stand up next weekend against Levante,” he stated.

When asked whether Osvaldo may have been offside on Espanyol’s second goal, Godín replied “I don’t know. I’d have to see it, but that’s football. Those are very fast, millimetric decisions and we have to play and do our best to forget about everything else.”

Losing a lead twice instead of increasing it was a shame. “We had to have built on our lead or kept it. I’ll repeat that we felt really good. There were times during the game in which we had everything controlled and were playing well, but the game opened up and became back and forth, a bit crazy and that didn’t favor us. Especially since we already had the lead. We’re leaving with one point and I’ll insist that we have to make it stand up next weekend,” he stated.

The Uruguayan defender doesn’t think that the team settled for a draw. “We ran a lot during the match and I don’t think that we settled for anything. Obviously Champions is quite far and we’re in a tough battle with Sevilla, Villarreal, Athletic and Espanyol. We know that we depend on ourselves and that we have to play well if we want to qualify for Europe,” he said.

The fact is that Atlético de Madrid is now level on points with Sevilla and two behind Athletic, who sits fifth. “There are six games left and it’s going to be very difficult, but we’re convinced that this is the right path. Beyond the result and the point earned against Espanyol, the team is giving off good vibes. We ran a lot, had a very good attitude and this will take us to Europe from here to the end of the season,” he asserted.

Concerning his countryman Diego Forlán, he commented that “we always want all of the players to be available and nobody wants anyone to be injured. We hope that Diego is back for next weekend.”

Osvaldo was a nightmare for the ‘rojiblanco’ defense. “As a defender, one is always studying other strikers and I know most of the forwards in this league pretty well. Osvaldo is a great striker and has many virtues. As I said before, for as good a game as we played, our opponents are also playing and Osvaldo, in this case, is an impressive player. He scored two goals on us and it’s a shame, but we’re leaving feeling pretty good and with the impression that we have a good squad that will take us to Europe at the end of the season,” he concluded.
