Atleti kicked off this season’s Champions League campaign with a goalless draw against FC Porto on Wednesday.

Suárez had the first attempt on goal of the game, but his left foot strike was saved by Costa. However, both sides struggled to dominate the match in the first half. Simeone mad the first substitution after 36’, when De Paul came on for Lemar. The Frenchman was substituted due to muscle pain. Suárez tried his luck from s free-kick shortly thereafter, but his shot flew over the crossbar. There weren’t any other big chances for either side before we reached half-time.

A few minutes into the second half, Simeone made a triple substitution as Lodi, Griezmann and Correa came on for Hermoso, Koke and João Félix. Atleti improved after that and collected several chances in the next few minutes. Correa came closest to scoring as his right foot strike forced a big save from Costa. Our strikers were inches away from connecting with the rebound. Simeome made his final switch with 15’ to go, when Felipe made way for Herrera. Kondogbia moved to centre-back as a result. FC Porto scored with around 10’ to go, but the goal was ultimately disallowed after a VAR check. We pushed for the winner until the end, but the visitors’ well-organised defence stood strong, and the game ultimately ended 0-0.
