Giménez renews his contract until 2023

Our Uruguayan centre back has played 38 matches this season. “I’m so happy, I really appreciate the club's confidence in me” he said after signing his new contract.

Atlético de Madrid are delighted to announce José María Giménez has renewed his contract with our club for five more years, until 30 June, 2023. Giménez has been an important player this season and has participated in 38 matches. In total, he’s defended our colours 134 times. In these 134 matches defending our shirt, the Uruguayan has scored six goals.

“I’m so happy, I really appreciate the club's confidence in me”, Giménez said. "Since I arrived at the club we have grown so much, we have won important tittles, we have consolidated between the great teams in Europe, we have a brand new stadium and it is an honor that they bet on me and to be able to keep contributing to the growth of this great project. Miguel Ángel Gil has shown me the confidence that the club puts on me in a conversation in a Montevideo. Gestures like these can’t be forgotten and this end it up to take this decision."

In addition, our player said: "We have a fantastic group that is the key to all of our sports success and since I arrived here I feel like home, that’s wat I want to give my best to thank the confidence shown."

He also dedicated a few words to the fans: "Also, I want to thanks to the fans for their support, it is very important for me”, he said. "It’s something that my family and I wanted. It is not another occurrence in my life.”

Giménez joined our club in 2013 and has since then defended our badge in numerous competitions: LaLiga, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League. His debut for our team came on 14 September, 2013 against Almería. While playing for our club, Giménez has won one UEFA Europa League, one Spanish Super Cup and one LaLiga.

In addition, Giménez is a very important player of the Uruguayan national team and forms pair of centres back with Diego Godín. The Uruguayan centre back has played a total of 42 games with the blue shirt in which he has scored five goals.
