Giménez reaches 200 Atleti games

José María Giménez made his 200th Atleti appearance during Wednesday’s match at Cornellà.
The Uruguayan joined our club at age 18 in April 2013 and went on to make his debut five months later – on Sep. 14. That day, he played alongside his fellow countryman Diego Godín as we beat Almería 4-2. Atleti won the league that season as Giménez grew and learned from Godín, João Miranda and Toby Alderweireld.
He became a key defender in our team in the following seasons, while his character and grit made him a fan-favourite. His performances at our club earned him a spot in the Uruguay national team, for which he played in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.
Giménez reached 100 games for Atleti in October 2017, earning him a spot in the Wanda Metropolitano Walk of Legends. The 25-year-old is now one of our club captains and has so far made 136 appearances in LaLiga, 35 in the Champions League, 20 in the Copa del Rey, seven in the Europa League, one in the UEFA Super Cup and one in the Spanish Super Cup. Apart from the 2013/14 league title, the Uruguayan also won the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2018.
