Gabi joins first team coaching staff
Our long-serving captain and club legend returns home to join the Argentine manager’s backroom team.
Gabriel Luis Fernández Arenas (Madrid, July 10, 1983) will join Simeone’s coaching staff as an assistant from this season onwards.
Our long-serving captain and club legend joined our Academy as a young boy, in the Alevín age group, and went on to make his first team debut on Jan. 21, 2004. He represented the club for 11 seasons across two spells – from 2004 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2018 – going on to play 417 official matches in our colours. He was club captain for six seasons.
The Spaniard won the UEFA Europa League in 2012 and 2018, the UEFA Super Cup in 2012, the Copa del Rey in 2013, LaLiga in 2014 and the Spanish Super Cup in 2014, lifting the last five as captain after taking over the armband from Antonio López.
After retiring as a player in 2020, Gabi began his coaching career, initially at Getafe CF – first with the Juvenil B side and then with the Madrid club’s reserve team – and later as manager of Real Zaragoza.
Welcome back, Gabi!
