Forlán: “Uruguay must live up to the fans expectations and have a good Copa America”

“It’s a new challenge and something very special for me”

Atletico de Madrids Uruguayan forward Diego Forlán is fully prepared for the Copa America 2011 which will take place in Argentina. After playing two friendly matches against Germany and Plaza Colonia, the ‘rojiblanco’ player has got his mind set on a good performance for the ‘charrúas’ and reaching the final.
Along with Chile, Mexico and Peru, Uruguay will fight it out to top Group C, which on paper looks the toughest. The Uruguayans will be looking to get off to a winning start against Peru.
Forlán explained to us how the national team are going to approach this current edition of the Copa America. “For every one of us who takes part it will be a good tournament, for Uruguay it will be more special as its played next door in Argentina. It’s a challenge for us and after what we experienced in the world Cup, it will be a special Copa America”, he told the Atlético de Madrid official website.
Diego confirmed that “We’ve arrived in good shape, but the expectations are higher after a good world cup. It’s a good motivator and a big challenge for our national side.  I think it’s going to be a difficult Copa America in general”.
“All the teams involved are capable of having a good tournament, it’s very completive these days. Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay or Chile are just some of the favorites. It’s difficult to predict who´ll make the final. Hopefully the Copa America will have the level we’re all expecting”, highlighted the striker.
When questioned about the group, Forlán didn’t want to rule out any of the countries, saying that “these days it’s difficult to know who´ll get to the final. Within the group, Uruguay have a great history which we’ve shown in the past, Chile has improved lots in recent years, Peru has always had a reputation for playing good football and Mexico puts its emphasis on their young players”. They´re all teams known for playing good football, and I’m sure they’ll be looking to show that again in this tournament”.
On a personal level, after a long season, Diego is looking forward to the tournament with the hope of leaving his mark. The Atlético No. 7 will be looking to break some records in Argentina, he’s only 3 games away from equaling the record for most games played for Uruguay, currently held by Rodolfo Rodríguez. He can also equal or even beat the current goal scoring record set by Hector Scarone. The Atlético currently has 29 goals to his name, only 2 short of the 31 scored by ‘The Magician’.
Diego Forlán knows that this could be his Copa America and doesn’t want to leave anything to chance, he’s looking to work as hard as possible along with his teammates, without losing the enjoyment out on the field. “I hope the people will be able to see a Diego playing well and enjoying himself on the field of play”, he assured us.
“During the World Cup we experienced some intense moments. The demand on us has grown and the expectations are now higher. The public want to see the same level we showed during the World Cup. It’s an attractive challenge and also on a personal note for me, I can’t wait to get going”, concluded Forlán
