AT THE WANDA METROPOLITANO

Filipe Luis: "Today is a happy day, not a sad one, because I've given my all for this club"

The Brazilian said goodbye to Atlético de Madrid during an event at the Wanda Metropolitano. The left-back has played 333 matches and won seven trophies.

Filipe Luis said farewell to Atlético de Madrid on Sunday during an event at the Wanda Metropolitano. The Brazilian closes a very successful phase of his career, in which he has played 333 games (240 in LaLiga, 41 in the Champions League, 25 in the Copa del Rey, 24 in the Europa League, two in the Spanish Super Cup and one in the UEFA Super Cup) at our club. Those 333 matches make him the 18th player with the most appearances for Atleti, as well as the second non-Spanish player with the most games at our club (Diego Godín is the first).

During his eight years in Red & White, the left-back has won seven trophies: three UEFA Super Cups (2010, 2012 and 2018), two Europa Leagues (2012 and 2018), one Copa del Rey (2013) and one LaLiga title (2013-14).

Club president Enrique Cerezo thanked the Brazilian for his services.

“You’ve played 333 games for Atleti and you’ve owned the left-flank. You’ve won seven titles. The fans and all of us will miss you. Good luck in your next step and thank you very much,” our president said.

Filipe Luis reflected on his time at our club.

“I’m privileged to have been a part of the best era of this club. I want to thank everyone. We enjoyed great moments. Today is a happy day, because I’ve given my all for this club. Playing at the Calderón and enjoying the Wanda Metropolitano’s first years has been unique. I will be back in the future, this is just a farewell as a player,” the Brazilian said.

Koke, Oblak, Saúl, Savic, Morata, Simeone, Óscar Ortega, Germán Burgos and staff members presented Filipe Luis with a shirt signed by his teammates.

Our captain also shared a few words for the left-back.

“I want to thank you for everything you’ve done for Atleti. You’ve been one of the world’s best left-backs, and of Atlético de Madrid’s history. I’m going to miss you greatly,” Koke said.

Afterwards, club legend Clemente Villaverde presented Filipe Luis with a commemorative plaque for his 333 games at our club.

The event ended as Miguel Ángel Gil, Enrique Cerezo, Andrea Berta, Clemente Villaverde and Filipe Luis posed together for a photograph.
