FC Porto will be one of our Champions League group stage opponents. Founded in 1893, they have never been relegated and have won 29 Portuguese leagues, 17 Cups and 22 Super Cups. They have also won the Champions League and Europa League twice and the UEFA Super Cup once. Their trophy cabinet also boasts two Club World Cup titles.
This will be the fifth time we face the Portuguese club. The first time was in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and the next three in the Champions League – twice in the group stage (2009/10 and 2013/14) and once in the 2008/09 last 16.
Sérgio Conceição has been the coach since 2017. He has built a strong and efficient team that finished second in the Primeira Liga and reached the Champions League quarterfinals last season – knocking out Juventus in the process. They eventually lost narrowly (2-1) to Chelsea, who went on to win the competition.
FC Porto play their home games at Do Dragão, their home since 2003. It holds over 50,000 spectators and hosted the Euro 2004 final. In our three matches there, we picked up one win, one draw and one defeat.
Several players have played for both Atleti and FC Porto, including Paulo Futre and Radamel Falcao. The former arrived after winning the European Cup with the Portuguese club and became one of the most well-loved players in Atleti’s history. The latter played two seasons at our club, scoring 70 goals in 91 games.
FC Porto’s current squad is:
