Farewell at the Calderon to a great season
Last match of the season at the Calderon and first one after the great victory at the King's Cup Final last 17th of May against Real Madrid.
The ‘Kings of Spain’ returned home after their great victory on the Kings Cup Final against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. They did so in order to play the last home match of the season against Real Mallorca.
Half an hour before the beginning of the match, it was time to party and to celebrate the title conquered 10 days ago at home of the neighbor.
The fans were able to see, once more, the nine Cup titles won by the club in the past and, of course, to see for the first time this year’s cup at the Calderon, introduced by the captain, Gabi. Beside him, the top scorer of the team, Radamel Falcao, carried the UEFA SuperCup conquered by the red & whites last 31st of August in Monaco.
After the celebration it was time to play. Simeone chose the same eleven starters that played the final, looking forward to win the last home match of this incredible 2012-13 season.
The first half was really equalized. Neither Atletico nor Mallorca did much in order to score the first goal of the night.
In the 27th minute of the match, the top scorer of the Balearic team, Tomer Hemed, injured himself and had to be substituted five minutes later. Nsue took his place on the pitch.
This first half of the match got to an end after the referee, Teixeira Vitienes, disallowed an off side goal of Diego Costa.
By the contrary, the second half began with rhythm and good goal attempts by both teams. Mallorca tried first with a good shot made by Giovani Dos Santos and a better save of Thibaut Courtois.
In the sixth minute of the second half, it was time for Diego Godín and for Atletico. The Uruguayan tried to beat Aouate with a header after a corner kick.
Just after this goal attempt, Diego Pablo Simeone decided to let Oliver Torres, Atletico’s youth star, to get into the pitch instead of the Turkish star, Arda Turan.
Ten minutes later, Teixeira Vitienes disallowed a new goal of Atletico. In this case it was after a good header of Falcao. He was also in off side.
The match reached to its end with the same result it began 90 minutes earlier, 0-0, and with Atletico celebrating the conquest of the King’s Cup and it’s third position on the league table that allow them to play next season’s UEFA Champions Leage.
By the contrary, Real Mallorca needs to win the last match of the season in order to have a minimum chance of staying on first division
