Eduardo Salvio begins rehab on Thursday the 19th at Estadio Vicente Calderón

“I had a spectacular year at Benfica”

Eduardo Salvio began rehab on the fifth metatarsal fracture in his right foot on Thursday, May 19. He suffered the injury during the Europa League return leg quarterfinal match that Benfica were playing against PSV Eindhoven. “I got kicked in the calf and when I put my foot down I injured the fifth metatarsal.”

He began his rehabilitation work with the Club Atlético de Madrid medical staff. The first session was held at Estadio Vicente Calderón, as the first team was training at the ‘rojiblanco’ coliseum to later be present at the presentation of the new Visa Atlético de Madrid credit card from la Caixa, one of the Club sponsors.

To begin, the work will consist of a magnetotherapy session, work in the swimming pool with Oscar Pitillas and then treatment with the Club physical therapists. Salvio acknowledged that the season, with the exception of the injury, was very positive for him. “It was a great year for me. I had a great time at Benfica, they made me feel very comfortable and I was very happy. The fans treated me very well and that made me feel happy during the entire season,” he said.

Benfica had a good season, winning the Portuguese League Cup and making it to the Cup and Europa League semi-finals. “We won the Taça de la Liga and I think that we all had a great year at Benfica. It was a spectacular year for me. I’ve matured, grown as a player and felt wonderful. If you take out the bad memory of the injury, it was a great year in Portugal becaue I won a spot at Benfica, I played in the Europa League and we did well,” he highlighted.

His experience in Europe has been positive, as he’s won a title per season, the Europa League with Atlético de Madrid and the League Cup with Benfica. “The truth is that I came to Europe with the intention of winning titles at Atleti and then when I left for Benfica I had the same goal, and I achieved them. It’s a great step for my athletic career and I hope to earn many more titles,” he commented.

For the time being, he’s only focused on getting back into shape, as he has approximately a month and a half of recovery ahead of him. “Right now I’m only thinking about getting better and being at one hundred percent when the new season is ready to get underway. I hope to be ready for the pre-season and earn myself a spot at Atleti,” he stated.

He followed the path of Atlético de Madrid this season and believes that they didn’t have the season they expected. “I’ve paid attention to Atleti and it wasn’t a great year, but they were able to qualify for the Europa League. They’ll have to try and improve next season,” he asserted.

He pointed out that he surprised that Atlético were unable to qualify for Champions League with their current squad, given that “Atlético have the squad to be in Champions. Because of the Club and their roster, they’re always obligated to make it to Champions League. Things didn’t go the way they wanted, but Atleti are a team that should be up higher in Spanish football.”

Salvio believes that the coaching change will make everything start from zero for the entire squad because “the team is going to have to adapt to another manager as quickly as possible, but for the new season the squad will have to start from zero, with a new gaffer and a newfound desire. I hope that it’s a great year for everyone, for the squad, the coaching staff and the supporters.”

He singled out Agüero and Messi above all the other players in La Liga. Salvio stated that “they’re two incredible players. Both Messi and Kun never stop scoring. There’s a reason they’re the best players in the world. We have Kun at our home and we hope to take advantage of that for many years. Atleti are lucky to have Agüero in the squad. With his quality, many teams would love to have him. For us, it’s really nice to have Agüero in the team.”

Argentina will be playing the Copa America at home. They’re the organizing country and have an unbeatable opportunity in front of their own fans. “It’s a big challenge for Argentina and for the national team. As we’re playing at home, we have a greater obligation to win. We hope that things go as well as possible for the national team. We have a great squad with excellent players. I think that Argentina is going to have a great Copa,” he finished.
