Diego Costa: 'The match against Espanyol is important and we have to win”

The ‘rojiblanco’ striker emphasized the good mental state of the squad

Diego Costa is aware that the ‘rojiblanco’ squad has a lot on the line this Saturday against Espanyol. A victory would boost the team up into Champions spots. For this reason he assured that we have to win. The Catalan side is a good team that is in fine form. They have good players and haven’t let many points get away. They deserve their position in the league table. They fight from the first minute in every match. Moreover, they’re playing good football. We know the importance of the match. We’re going to go out to win, as we have the responsibility of earning the victory.”

The ‘rojiblanco’ striker admitted that the squad is in a good mental state after its recent triumph over Real Sociedad. “We knew the importance of getting the victory and we earned the three points. The first half wasn’t good, but we showed the team that we are in the second half. With the players up front and the rest of the squad, we have to go out to win in every game,” he stated.

Atlético de Madrid set a goal of being in fourth place before the end of the year. With four matches to go they’re one step from achieving that. “If we continue to play like this we’ll do it. The team is in good form. Forlán has started scoring goals again and we’re well positioned to achieve it.”

Diego Costa has gotten plenty of minutes since the season began, but after the returns of Agüero and Forlán, the doors to a starting spot have been shut.I knew that I was going to have a tough time starting. But I think that I took advantage of the minutes I had. I left everything on the pitch. I was aware that Forlán would recover from his scoring drought. Kun is also in fine form. They form a great duo and have been playing together for many years. I’m going to keep working to take advantage of my opportunities. The team is what’s important,” he pointed out.

One of the keys to finish the season in Champions spots lies in not losing points at the Vicente Calderón. “I think that we’ve done well at home. We’re playing well, more relaxed than away from home. We needed to win and we did so against Real Sociedad. Now we’re in a good mental state to approach the upcoming matches.”
