De Gea: 'The fans can relax; I’m staying here”
The goalkeeper received the Castilla La Mancha Designation of Origin Award
On the afternoon of 23 November, David De Gea received the ‘Premio Joven 2010 Denominación de Origen La Mancha’ (‘2010 La Mancha Designation of Origin Youth Award’) in the sports category. The ceremony, which was held at the MAPFRE Conventions Centre, and was hosted by the journalist Pilar García Muñiz. The goal of this event is to recognize the talent of young up-and-comers in the world of the arts and sport who have stood out for their performances in the professional field. Also given La Mancha Designation of Origin awards were the actress Elena Rivera in the category of Performing Arts and the Bullfighter Rubén Pinar.
But they weren’t the only award-winners, as Antonio López, the great painter and sculptor from La Mancha, also received an honorary award. All of the award-winners received economic compensation, which they didn’t hesitate to donate to various charities. Thus, David De Gea donated his to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), Elena Rivera to the Vicente Ferrer Foundation and Rubén Pinar to the ACAFEM.
One of the qualities for which David was chosen to receive the award was for being a player with extraordinary characteristics, a trait he shares with the young D.O. La Mancha wines. Youth and excellence are examples of the qualities that have turned this player from La Mancha into a future star of Spanish football. The player, after accepting the award, wanted to dedicate it to a very special person. “My father. He’s always there by my side. He accompanies me everywhere and he shares everything with me,” stated the goalkeeper.
Afterwards, the young netminder attended to the media and acknowledged that “Atlético de Madrid has given me everything. I feel praised that a Club as big as Manchester United is interested in me, but I carry Atleti deep inside me and I want to stay here.”
The goalkeeper didn’t hesitate to send a message of calm to the supporters and explained that “the fans can relax, as I am, because I’m staying here. I’m very calm and there’s no reason to move. I’m very comfortable here, I’ve been here my entire life and it’s a grand Club that deserves everything,” he stated.
When the time came to review the current state of the team, De Gea explained that “we’ve been playing well for several weeks with good football. We just need to win away from home, we’ve done that, and we have to continue like this. We’ve found a good line and we hope to move on up.”
