MATCH RECAP

Chelsea take the lead in Bucharest

Our team lost 1-0 to Chelsea in Bucharest on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League last 16. Simeone’s men will need to turn things around in London.

Atleti suffered a first leg blow in the Champions League last 16 as we feel 1-0 to Chelsea in Bucharest. Our team will have to turn things around in the second leg in London on March 17.

We had a massive chance 15’ in as Suárez won the ball back and spotted Lemar – the Frenchman only just connected with the ball and was unable to place it in the back of the net. Neither side had many chances, but Simeone’s men looked dangerous when they counter attacked. Chelsea realised and tried to foul our players before we could hit them on the break.

There were no substitutions at half-time and there wasn’t much of a change in terms of how both teams approached the match. Joao Félix attempted a bicycle kick in what was perhaps the closest we were from scoring. But unfortunately, it was the hosts who took the lead some 70’ into the game after a very long VAR check. Giroud received the ball in a clear offside position, but it was deemed the ball had come off Hermoso. Simeone answered with a triple substitution as Lodi, Torreira and Dembélé came on for Saúl, Correa and Joao Félix. Hermoso also made way for Vitolo shortly thereafter. We looked for the equaliser until the end, but the game ultimately ended 1-0.

Atleti will look to turn things around in London.
