Champions League showdown at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano!
This Tuesday at 21:00 CET, we will face the current German Champions, in a match in which a win would ensure, at least, a spot in the play-off phase for the Champions League.
The Champions League is back at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano this Tuesday, with an authentic showdown in which the current German Champions Bayer Leverkusen will visit us. The match will kick off at 21:00 CET and is the seventh and penultimate matchday of the league phase of the continent’s highest level footballing competition. Italian official Ciro Carbone will be the referee for the match.
We come into the game sitting in eleventh place in the table, with twelve points gained so far, just one point behind Bayer, who sit in fourth, in one of the positions permitting direct access to the last-16. A win against Xabi Alonso’s side would, at least, mathematically secure our spot in the play-off spots and would leave us in a very good position to fight for a spot in the top eight on the final matchday in Austria.
This will be the eleventh occasion in which both sides have met in an official match, with the previous results resulting in a perfectly balanced record: three wins for the Rojiblancos, four draws and three wins for the German side. However, Bayer have never managed to win at our stadium.
However, in order to maintain this unbeaten streak, we will need to break Bayer’s current run of eleven consecutive wins in the Bundesliga. An exciting clash lies ahead, and one in which we will need to closely Florian Wirtz, who, despite being a midfielder, is the sides top scorer in the Champions League with five goals. For our side, Antoine Griezmann has had six goal involvements in as many matches in this edition of the competition, with four goals and two assists to his name.
