Champions League campaign comes to an end in London
Our team lost 2-0 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the return leg of the Champions League last 16.
Atleti were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday as Chelsea won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Despite an intense start from our team, the hosts began to dominate possession relatively early on. Lodi had the first attempt on target of the clash, which was saved by Mendy. Unfortunately, Chelsea’s long periods of possession paid off and they took the lead through Ziyech some 35’ in. Paradoxically, the goal came via a counter-attack led by Werner, who assisted the Dutchman. Atleti reacted through a Joao Félix strike from the edge of the box, but it was saved by Mendy.
Simeone brought Hermoso on for Lodi at the break – thus changing the system. The Argentine’s next move was bringing on another striker, Dembélé, who came on for Carrasco. We began to enjoy more possession, but struggled to create chances. Suárez made way for Correa as Simeone looked to benefit from a more dynamic forward. He then made another offensive switch as Lemar came on for Trippier. We kept trying and had more attempts, the best of which was a close-range strike from Joao Félix that was saved by Mendy. However, our chances seemed to evaporate when the referee showed Savic a straight red card. We never gave up and Joao Félix forced Mendy into making another superb save, but we were unable to score. The hosts scored again in stoppage time through Emerson via a counter-attack and the game ended 2-0 in London.
