Caminero and Aguilera are presented as pillars of the Sports Structure

Enrique Cerezo presided over the act in the VIP Room

José Luis Pérez Caminero and Carlos Aguilera were presented on Monday, May 30 in the Estadio Vicente Calderón VIP Room. Both form part of the process of restructuring Club Atlético de Madrid. The organization on the banks of the Manzanares River has named Caminero as Sports Director, while Aguilera will be the Director of the Football Academy.

These two men were standouts at Atlético de Madrid as players and will be in charge of managing the athletic part of the organization, lending the utmost importance to the coordination between the Professional Squad and the Academy. Both Caminero and Aguilera are starting a new stage in their professional careers after giving their all in wearing the red-and-white jersey.

As it could be no other way, the event was presided over by Enrique Cerezo, who highlighted the Atlético ‘sentiment’ of both men and their values. The President began by saying that “to start, I’d like to publicly thank Jesús García Pitarch and José María Amorrortu for the service they’ve given this organization, as well as for the professionalism and dedication with which they’ve carried out their work over the course of the last five years. With them in the positions of Sports Director and Director of the Football Academy, the Club has taken big steps in its growth and consolidation process in the athletic field.

“The first team returned to Europe and stayed in European competitions places and faced the strongest teams on the continent, playing in two Champions Leagues and two Europa Leagues, one of which will go down in history, as it climaxed in the winning of two important European titles, the first in the final in Hamburg and the second in the European Super Cup in Monaco, that we now show off with pride in our trophy case,”
he declared.

Regarding the youth system, the President assured that “on the other hand, in our academy, the seeds that we’ve been sowing have germinated thanks the work of coaches and directors of the Football Academy, which beyond getting results, have fulfilled their main task of forming players and passing on the values in which we believe.

“As fruit of this work, we can boast about having footballers of renowned quality in the first squad such as Domínguez, De Gea, Joel or Mario Suárez, who we resigned, as well as Koke and Pulido, who have joined the first team work, or those who are also habitual in squad lists and games such as Noguera, Alberto Perea and Borja González”,
he emphasized.

Enrique Cerezo pointed out that “they’ve given us important results in the last 5 years, but now the cycle has ended and another one is about to end, marked by the return of the ‘rojiblanco sentiment’. The Club has embarked upon a restructuring process of its athletic department and has chosen two men who stood out in ‘rojiblanco’ history to head this new project. They will be the men in charge of directing the Professional Football Team and the Football Academy and ensuring the operation and coordination of two sections that are the main pillars on which any sports organization is supported, the pillars of our present and our future. Therefore, their incorporation responds to the athletic model that the organization is implementing, a model that, without renouncing going to the market to look for big stars, wants to forge great players from our youth system, so that tomorrow they will be the new first members of our first squad. The coordination between the Professional Football Team and the Football Academy will therefore be necessary and fundamental. José Luis Pérez Caminero and Carlos Aguilera, mythical figures from the nineties, have accepted this new challenge with excitement and enthusiasm.

“Our paths are thus crossing once again as, from this Monday on, both of them will have the chance to contribute to the growth and progress of our Club, but this time not from the playing field, but rather from another different perspective, but just as important and exciting,”
he stated.

To finish his speech, the President left it clear that “from within the organization, we welcome you both and we want to express our thanks for having accepted this project, in which you can count on the support of everyone that helps form part of this Club and all ‘atleticos’ everywhere. For this reason, there’s nothing left for me to say other than to thank you and wish you both the best of luck on this new journey.”

The new Sports Director of Atlético de Madrid, José Luis Pérez Caminero took the microphone and said that “this is a very special day for me. When I arrived at this Club as a player, I didn’t know that it was such a grand institution. I can promise that I’m going to work hard with excitement and desire.

“I carry the ‘rojiblanco’ sentiment inside me and that forces me to do more. The Club deserves the best, and so do the Atlético supporters. Atlético de Madrid has to be in the place it deserves,” he commented.

For his part, Carlos Aguilera highlighted that “the first thing that I’d like to do is thank Atlético for allowing us to embark on this new project. It’s an exciting project and both of us are filled with pride to be here. The fact is that even though we left, we never abandoned the Club. I can’t wait to start working and I’m confident in the work that we can do together.”
