Atlético will face Espanyol in the Copa del Rey round of 16
The first leg will be at the Vicente Calderón and the return at Cornellá-El Prat
On Thursday 18 November the public draw corresponding to the round of 16, quarterfinals and semi-finals of the Copa del Rey was held at the ‘Ciudad del Fútbol’ facilities in Las Rozas (headquarters of the Royal Spanish Football Federation). After getting past the round of 32 without too many problems against Universidad Las Palmas, the ‘rojiblanco’ squad will try to continue with their successful run in this competition against Espanyol de Barcelona, managed by Mauricio Pochettino. The first leg match will be played at Estadio Vicente Calderón and the return at Estadio Cornellá-El Prat.
If Quique Sánchez Flores’ team wins this tie against the Catalan club, and Real Madrid does the same against Luis García Plaza’s Levante, there will be another Madrid derby in the quarterfinals of the competition. The first leg fixture would be at the Santiago Bernabéu and the return at the Vicente Calderón. It would undoubtedly be another motive to move forward in the Copa del Rey.
The reason for which the three drags were held during the same act is due to the circumstance that the three rounds are played quite closely to one another. The round of 16 matches will be held on 22 December (first leg) and 5 January (return leg), while the quarterfinals will take place on 12 January (first leg) and the 19th of the same month (return leg). The final qualifying round before the grand finale will be played on 26 January (first leg) and 2 February (return leg).

In the draw, the order of the games was decided by the same order from which the lottery balls were drawn from the drum, except in the match-ups between teams from different divisions (Córdoba and Betis are Second Division squads). In those cases, the first leg matches will be played, logically, in the stadium of the team from the lower division and the return leg in that of the higher division.
Since Quique Sánchez Flores took over at the held of Atlético de Madrid, the manager from Madrid has always been very interested in this competition. Atlético de Madrid is a team with a brilliant track record in Cup play and after just missing out on Cup glory last season in the final of the knockout tournament at the Nou Camp against Sevilla, they are ready for a run to the title this year, always with the humbleness and respect towards their opponents which characterizes them.
