Atlético make it 14 in a row
Game by game, win by win, the team are achieving their objectives. A sixth straight win at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano and a 14th in all competitions.
The 1-0 win against Osasuna, thanks to Julián Alvarez’s goal, saw Atlético de Madrid extend their winning run to 14 games in all competitions, the longest in Club history. Luis Aragonés’ maxim of “win, win, win and win again” has seen a resurgence at Atleti. It just had to happen under Diego Pablo Simeone as well, who has also broken his own personal record of 13 straight victories as Atleti boss in 2012/13, his first season at the helm during which he won his first title at the Club: the Copa del Rey at the Bernabéu against Real Madrid.
The Rojiblancos’ current run began in the first round of the Copa del Rey when Atlético beat Vic 2-0 away from home – Julián Alvarez with both of the goals, one of them from the penalty spot. Their successive victims were Las Palmas (2-0), Mallorca (1-0), Alavés (2-1), Valladolid (5-0), Sevilla (4-3), Getafe (1-0), Barcelona (2-1) and Osasuna in LaLiga, as we all as Cacereño (3-1) and Marbella (1-0) in the Copa del Rey, and PSG (2-1), Sparta Praha (6-0) and Slovan Bratislava (3-1) in the Champions League.
This streak keeps us in contention on all fronts, given that the win against Osasuna has taken us into top spot in LaLiga at the halfway mark. In the cup, we have our round of 16 tie with Elche next Wednesday, while our three Champions League wins have put us in a good position to qualify for the knock-out rounds with games to spare. On Tuesday 21 January, we host Bayer Leverkusen and a win would take us through.
