Atletico Madrid knocked Celtic out of the 1974 European Cup 

The Scottish club replace Sion in Atletico’s group in the Europa League

The decision of the UEFA Control and Disciplinary board to accept Celtic protests of improper alignment of the opponent, Sion, in the 'play off' the Europa League makes means they’ll play Atletico Madrid in the Group Stage of the Europa League. Atletico Madrid and Celtic meet again 38 years after Atletico eliminated the Scottish side in the semi-finals of the European cup.   Celtic has a great history in European competitions. Founded in 1887 in the capital of Scotland, Glasgow, Parkhead area, the club has managed 42 league titles and 35 Cups. The play their home games at the legendary Celtic Park, Scotland's largest stadium, with seating for 60,832 spectators.   It is, to date, the only Scottish club to have won the European Cup, which it picked up in 1967 in Lisbon against Inter Milan.    In the international arena, Celtic played in the UEFA Cup final again in 2003, a game won by Porto.  80,000 fans traveled to Seville to follow Celtic, many of them without tickets and UEFA and FIFA awarded the Scottish club for the excellent behavior of their fans in Seville.   The only meeting in European competition between Atletico Madrid and Celtic was back to the 73-74 season in semifinals of the European Cup. The rojiblancos visited Celtic Park in a controversial match refereed by the Turkish official Babacan, who sent off three Atleti players, Panadero Díaz, Quique y Ayala, but despite all these difficulties, Atletico Madrid drew 0-0 taking the game to the Vicente Calderon, where goals from Garate and Adelard toppled the Scots, leaving wide open the doors to the final of the Cup that was disputes on the 15th of 1974 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels.    Now, 38 years after Atletico Madrid have become a rival to the Celtic, a team that has been rejuvenated with the signings of goalkeeper Forster, defenders  Thompson, Wilson, Matthews, Hooiveld and El Kaddouri, midfielders Wanyama and Commons and the attacking player Diawara, Bangura and Rasmussen.
