THE FIFTH ALL MADRID CUP FINAL

Atletico have the edge

After beating Jaén, Getafe, Betis and Sevilla, we are in the Cup final of His Majesty the King’s cup against Real Madrid. This is the 19th final the club will dispute, and the fifth against our neighbours from Madrid, who we have beaten three times in the Bernabeu.

The first final clash between the two Madrid clubs was held in 1960 at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. With José Villalonga leading from the bench, the goals from Jones, Collar & Peiró gave Atletico their first title (3-1) in a competition that has brought much joy to the club.

The next meeting between the two in the final didn’t have to wait long, a year later they met again at he Bernabeu and history repeated itself this time a goal from Mendonça and two from Peiró made it 3-2 and saw the club lift their second trophy.

The final of 1975 is the only one so far that Atletico Madrid have lost. A tight game that ended 0-0 went to penalties do decide the home of the cup and that occasion it was taken away from the Vicente Calderon, the scene of that final.

The most recent, with Luis Aragonés on the bench, saw Futre and Schuster on top, a victory that Simeone and his warriors will have the opportunity to repeat next May on stage yet to be decide.
