Atletico deserved more
A draw at the Calderon
Atletico Madrid and Sevilla drew 0-0 at the Calderon, in a match which Atletico shaded in terms of quality of play and chances on goal. Gregorio Manzano men bombarded Javi Varas goal but couldn’t find the breakthrough. Atletico will have to settle with the second draw of the season at the Calderon. Sevilla escaped alive from the banks of the Manzanares and remain unbeaten in the championship.
Atletico came close to scoring on several occasions, at times the red and whites had a real advantage over their opponent, but neither Diego nor Reyes, the most prominent in the first half, were able to make the difference. After just 4 minutes, Reyes was close with a right footed shot which was cut out by Javi Varas the Sevilla goalkeeper. But the clearest chance came after ten minutes, Diego, Silvio and Reyes linked up well but Varas was not to be beaten. Diego also failed to score from a cross by Reyes, the ex-seville player. Nine minutes from the end of the first half, Filipe Luis found Falcao who was looking for a cross from the left but Fernando Navarro did enough to hold off the Columbian striker. Falcao angrily protested to the referee but nothing was given. Atletico came out optimistic, but it was Seville who came out with the bit between their teeth. During the whole first half they’d only managed to get near the home goals on one occasion from a corner, but in the second half, Courtois had to be at his best to keep a clean sheet. First Navas, who shot from close range with the right, and then Manu de Mora did all he could to beat the Belgian, but Courtois stood firm. The Seville onslaught only lasted 6 minutes before Altetico began to settle back in to the game. Reyes and Falcao were the main source of danger for the rojiblancos with Reyes finding Falcao only five yards out, but the Colombian hit the ball badly, and his effort sailed over the bar. The partnership linked up again five minutes later. This time Varas pulled off a fine save. After that Atletico were limited to shots from outside the area with Reyes, Diego and Salvio trying their luck but it was not to be Atleticos day. Atletico deserved much more from a direct rival who maintains the four points advantage. If there was a team that wanted to win, it was Atletico.
