Atleti suffered a narrow defeat at Athletic Club on Sunday. Savic’s goal wasn’t enough as we lost 2-1.

The hosts took the lead early on via a Berenguer header, successfully completing a fast break down the right flank. Our team answered right away through Carrasco, but Unai Simón saved the Belgian’s header. Felipe also had an attempt in the air which was again saved by the keeper. Simeone’s men searched for the equaliser throughout the first half, but Athletic Club defended well and we reached half-time one goal down.

Llorente was very close to scoring in the opening minutes of the second half, but his powerful left-foot strike was inches wide. Carrasco also had an attempt but was off target. Simeone decided to make a triple substitution as the game approached the hour-mark. Lemar, Joao Félix and Suárez came on for Trippier, Saúl and Herrera. All these attacking changes made us struggle in midfield for a couple of minutes and our coach was quick to react – bringing Torreira on for Correa. We kept pushing and attacking, but the goal didn’t arrive. Simeone’s fina change was replacing Lodi with Hermoso with about 15’ to go. We kept attacking and finally found the equaliser through Savic, who headed it home in the 78th minute. However, despite having chances to complete the comeback, Athletic Club scored again, this time from a corner, as Iñigo Martínez headed it powerfully into the back of the net. The game ended 2-1 in Bilbao.
