Atleti kicked off 2022 with a 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. Correa scored both goals at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Our team dominated the game and possession from the beginning, although the visitors were well organised. Suárez had the first big chance of the game as he stole the ball off a defender and faced the keeper one on one. Unfortunately, he was unable to beat him. We did take the lead shortly thereafter, though, when Correa found the back of the net as we approached the half-hour mark. The goal was preceded by an excellent play from De Paul and Carrasco. Our team improved as the first half progressed, and we were close to doubling our lead through Lodi. His powerful left-foot strike was saved by the keeper, and we reached half-time with the score at 1-0.

Simeone’s men started the second half with the same mindset. We searched for our second goal of the evening right away and found it in the 53rd minute. It was Correa once again – this time providing the finish after an excellent Lodi ball. Atleti were playing great football, but we didn’t stop there. Lemar almost made it 3-0 right away, but his chip was jut wide. Carrasco had an even bigger chance as his right-foot shot struck the post in the 67th minute. Simeone’s first substitution saw Cunha come on for Suárez. Falcao also came on for Rayo Vallecano with 15’ to go – and the Wanda Metropolitano awarded him with a standing ovation. Felipe replaced Carrasco just before stoppage time, and Atleti ultimately won 2-0 to secure three important points.
