Atleti closed out the year with an important 2-1 away win over Betis on Sunday. Correa and Morata got the goals in a hard-fought clash.
Our team found the back of the net early on, when Morata headed in style a cross from Joao Félix, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review as the Spaniard was inches offside. The trend changed after that moments and the hosts began to dominate possession and get close to Oblak’s box. In fact, 15 minutes in, they were very close to taking the lead as Feddal headed the ball onto the crossbar. Atleti managed to contain Betis after that, but Rubi’s men continued to enjoy possession. Joao Félix was our main offensive threat, and he had our team’s next chance when he forced Joel to make a save. But our best chance of the first half came 35 minutes in, as the Portuguese set Morata up with a clear run on goal, but the Spaniard’s shot struck the post after Joel got a hand to it. It was a massive chance and we were unlucky not to take the lead. Simeone’s men pushed until the end of the first half, but we were unable to find the breakthrough.
Atleti tried again after the break, with Trippier trying his luck with crosses from the right flank. Simeone’s first substitution was bringing Correa on for Lemar, and it proved to be an excellent decision as the Argentine scored just seconds after coming on. It was just what we needed, since our team had been containing the hosts very well for a while and we were only lacking the goal. The breakthrough gave our team more confidence and we started to collect chances, and we managed to double our lead five minutes before the end of the match. Correa set Morata up and the Spaniard found the back of the net in style. Betis pulled one back through Bartra in stoppage time, but the game ended shortly thereafter as Atleti closed out the year with an important away win. Thanks for your support in 2019!
