Atleti push until the end but draw at Espanyol
Our team drew 1-1 against Espanyol on Sunday after Saúl cancelled out the home side’s lead.
Atleti pushed until the end for a win but ultimately drew 1-1 at Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium on Sunday. A fantastic Saúl strike cancelled out the home side’s initial lead.
We were close to scoring from a corner very early on, but Diego López made a reflex save to deny Correa. But it was the hosts who struck first through a Savic own goal. It was unlucky, but we had to react. Although we tried throughout the first half, we struggled to break down the home side’s defence and we reached half-time one goal down.
However, what Simeone told the lads during the break, certainly seemed to work. Just a couple of minutes into the second half, Atleti finally found the equaliser… and it was a banger. A Trippier cross was cleared by the defence, but at the edge of the box was Saúl, who volleyed it in style and netted a worldie. It was the start we needed, and Simeone’s next move was bringing Joao Félix on for Carrasco. Diego Costa came on for Morata shortly thereafter, a few moments after the Spaniard had been inches away from scoring.
Espanyol regrouped and managed to get back on the ball following our team’s fantastic opening minutes of the second half. Simeone made his final substitution some 20 minutes from the end of the clash, as Vitolo came on for Correa. We pushed until the end and were close to scoring several times, but the match ultimately ended 1-1.
