Atleti lost 3-0 to Espanyol on Saturday at the RCDE Stadium.
Our team enjoyed a great start to the game. Firstly, Morata had a good chance very early on, but his close-range shot was saved by Diego López. A few minutes later, the Spanish striker headed the ball and Koke’s attempt was deflected, and immediately after, Savic’s header went wide.
After the frantic start, Rubi’s side managed to get into the game. They enjoyed longer spells on the ball and had a few chances. However, neither team dominated the reminder of the first half and there were no big chances until the last few minutes. Lemar tried his luck from outside the box and forced Diego López to a good save, and in stoppage time, Espanyol took the lead through a Godín own goal. It was unfortunate, but we still had 45 minutes to go.
Atleti were forced to make a substitution at half-time, as Correa came on for Savic. The Montenegrin was taken off due to muscle pain. We started well after the break, but the home team doubled their lead around 52 minutes in. It was a tough blow for our team, and Simeone reacted by making a double substitution: Vitolo and Montero came on for Lemar and Rodrigo.
Oblak was forced to make a couple of fantastic saves and later on Correa had a goal disallowed due to a handball when he controlled the ball. Just before the end of the match, Espanyol were awarded a penalty and Borja Iglesias converted, making the score 3-0.
