Atleti lost 2-1 at the Nuevo Los Cármenes on Wednesday despite creating many chances to win and an early Joao Félix goal.
Our team enjoyed the perfect start to the game, with Joao Félix scoring a beautiful goal less than two minutes into the clash. Simeone’s men controlled the game and looked to double the lead on the break. Unfortunately, the hosts equalised through a fantastic long-range strike just before we hit 20’. Darwin Machís was the goalscorer. We fought back to regain the lead and had several chances to do so – mainly from Suárez and Joao Félix, who was fantastic throughout the first half. The Portuguese magician managed to put us back in front in stoppage time through a header, but his goal was disallowed due to an alleged foul. Therefore, the game reached half-time with the score at 1-1.
Atleti resumed the game very well after the break and almost took the lead early into the second half. Carrasco provided an excellent cross and Hermoso headed from close range, but the keeper saved it. Joao Félix had another chance as he struck from the edge of the box, but his powerful shot hit the post. Granada got the rebound and counter attacked. The ball arrived at the feet of Jorge Molina, who scored to put his team one goal up. It was cruel and unfortunate, but we had just over 20’ to make a comeback. Simeone made a triple substitution as Herrera, Correa and Cunha came on for Kondogbia, De Paul and Suárez. Félix had another attempt from the edge of the box, but his strike was off target. Our coach made another change with just less than 15’ to go, when Lodi replaced Carrasco. Correa had a massive chance to equalise after a perfect cross from Lemar. His close-range strike unfortunately was off target. Cunha also had a big chance in the dying minutes. He was also off target and the game somehow ended 2-1 in Granada.
