Atleti knocked out of Copa del Rey on away goals
Our team fought until the bitter end on Wednesday night, but fell just short against Girona. We were knocked out on away goals.
Atleti were knocked out of the Copa del Rey on away goals on Wednesday night after drawing 3-3 against Girona.
Our team had a slight advantage from the first leg, where we earned a 1-1 draw away from home. Nevertheless, our boys attacked right from the off, and after a few chances, we took the lead after 12 minutes. Kalinic received a long ball and struck it into the back of the net from inside the box.
Atleti continued attacking in the following minutes, and even had a goal disallowed. The Croat scored once again but, after consulting the VAR, it was ruled offside. Unfortunately, Girona equalised after 37 minutes through Valery in their only chance up to that point.
Just after the break, our team had another great chance, this time through Correa. The Argentine shot from outside the box, Iraizoz got a hand to it and the ball ended up hitting the post. It wasn't meant to be our day, however, as the away side scored once again in just their second chance of the match. Stuani headed it into the back of the net following a free-kick. Atleti had half an hour to score two goals. Griezmann came on for Koke just after the goal.
But our team never stops believing, and Correa equalised just moments after. Girona were through at that point thanks to their away goals. We had around 25 minutes to score the winner. Atleti were on fire, but unlucky. We hit the crossbar and had yet another goal disallowed through offside. But we don't give, we never give, and Griezmann scored the third in the 84th minute. Unfortunately, once again, in their third chance, Girona equalised yeet again. Correa had a chance in stoppage time, but the ball went over the crossbar. The game ended shortly thereafter, and Atleti were knocked out of the Copa del Rey on away goals.
