Atleti’s Copa del Rey campaign kicks off in León, where we’ll be facing Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa on Thursday at 9 pm CET.
Our team lands in the competition in the last 32, having skipped the previous round thanks to our qualification for the Spanish Super Cup. Following our performance in Jeddah, our attention now turns to the Copa del Rey, which we have won 10 times.
On the other hand, our opponents have already knocked out two sides so far in the cup – they first earned a big 3-0 win over Las Rozas and they then beat Huesca 2-1. Both matches were played at the Reino de León, where they remain undefeated this season. Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa are currently second in their Segunda B group, having won seven and drawn three of their 10 league games at home.
Thursday’s game will be the fifth match-up between both clubs. Atleti won the previous four times. It will also be our fourth visit to León, and our first since 2003. That year, we faced the same opponents in the Copa del Rey’s third round and won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Fernando Torres.
