Atleti get late goal to draw 1-1 against Girona
Our team earned a 1-1 draw at Montilivi on Sunday. Simeone's side pushed to equalise after Stuani converted a penalty in the first half, and found the equaliser thanks to an own goal by Ramalho in the last few minutes.
Atleti earned a late draw against Girona at Montilivi stadium on Sunday.
Saúl played as a left-back due to our defensive injuries, but the Spaniard was a menace down the flank right from the off. A play started by our number 8 after just five minutes of game finished with a shot by Griezmann from outside the box that Bono saved.
But Girona are a strong team who are enjoying a good streak in LaLiga, and they weren't going to back down. Eusebio's side also tried to put pressure on our defense and they had a few chances during the first half.
Our team was able to contain the Catalan team's attacks and just after the 30-minute mark we had a fantastic chance to score. A magnificent team play ended in Saúl's feet, the Spaniard took a shot but the ball struck the crossbar. We were unlucky not to get the first goal, but it showed how dangerous our number 8 was even though he was playing at left-back.
Our team was picking up the rhythm, but just before half-time Girona were awarded a penalty and Stuani converted to put his side in the lead. Our team had 45 minutes to turn things around.
The second half progressed with Atleti searching for the equaliser, but Girona were very strong defensively. After 20 minutes, Simeone decided to make the first substition: Rodrigo made way for Correa. It was a very offensive change, as there were less than 30 minutes left to play, and ten minutes later our team made another offensive substitution when Gelson Martins came on for Arias. Our team went all-out to get the draw, and we almost scored through Saúl and Gelson in the next few minutes. The first one was saved miraculously by Gorka, and the second went wide of the post.
We deserved the goal and finally found it jsut after 80 minutes. Correa made a fantastic long pass, Costa controlled the ball and Ramalho introduced it into the back of his own net. Our team had finally equalised and we had almost ten minutes to get the win. Gelson Martins had a good chance in stoppage time but once again Gorka denied our team from scoring, anbd the match ended shortly thereafter. Our team earned a point at a difficult stadium and now have 25 points in LaLiga.
