Atleti earned an important win at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday against Girona. Two second half goals from Godín and Griezmann gave us the three points.
Doumbia had a good chance for the away side early on, but Oblak saved in style. Our team’s first chance came after a good team play, but Griezmann’s shot was denied by Iraizoz. We had more good chances in the following minutes as our strikers and midfielders linked up frequently. Arias was also a threat down the right flank. Five minutes before the end of the first half, Koke struck the post with an extraordinary shot from way out. We were very unlucky not to score, but we reached half-time with the score at 0-0.
After the break, Atleti had several chances, mainly through from Saúl and Morata. Simeone made a couple of offensive changes inside the first 20 minutes of the second half, as Correa and Vitolo came on for Thomas and Filipe. We kept pushing… and we finally found our goal. Godín headed it home some 15 minutes before the end. The referee disallowed the goal at first, but after a VAR review it was given.
Just before the end of the match, Griezmann scored the second as he lobbed the ball over Iraizoz in style to give our team three important points.
