Atleti completed a second-half comeback to beat VfL Wolfsburg 2-1 on Saturday. Garcés and Ricard scored the goals in Germany.
Simeone’s line-up included many Academy players, but also featured Lemar in what was the Frenchman’s first pre-season game. The first half was very evenly matched and our best chance was a Giuliano strike from inside the box that flew over the crossbar. However, it was the hosts who took the lead as we approached half-time. Weghorst was the goalscorer.
Simeone made three changes during the break as Vrsaljko, Riquelme and Lemar made way for Ricard, Valera and Camus. Garcés and Alberto Moreno then came on for Camello and Kondogbia. Our team improved in the second half and started collecting chances. Giuliano was very close to scoring after dispossessing the goalkeeper of the ball. He was even closer shortly thereafter, when he struck the crossbar from inside the box. We kept going and equalised with just over 20’ to go thanks to an impressive header from Garcés. Simeone made further substitutions as Grbic, Arias, Carlos Martín and Guerrero came on for Oblak, Serrano, Saúl and Giuliano. The Croatian goalkeeper was forced to make a sensational save from a close-range shot, keeping the score even. And with five minutes to go, Ricard finished in the near post as Garcés provided the assist. That way, Ricard and Garcés registered a goal and an assist each. Simeone brought Medrano on for Valera in stoppage time and the game finished shortly thereafter.
