Atleti earned a vital 2-0 win over the Russian side at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday. The goals from Joao Félix and Felipe sealed our qualification for the Champions League knockout stages.
Our team were off to a cracking start and were awarded a very early penalty for a foul on Joao Félix. Trippier stepped up to take it but the keeper made an excellent save. The Englishman didn’t get too discouraged, though, and kept running up the right flank. He delivered several crosses for his teammates, and one of his tries ended up being blocked by a defender’s arm. The referee checked VAR and awarded us the second penalty of the night, which Joao Félix converted to put us in front.
Atleti kept pushing and it looked as if we had doubled our lead through a Morata strike. However, following a VAR review, it was deemed just offside. We almost scored once again shortly thereafter as Joao Félix was just inches off target following a fantastic run. We reached half-time shortly thereafter.
We also started the second half strongly and finally managed to double our lead seven minutes in, when Koke set Felipe up and the Brazilian scored a fantastic goal – his first official one for us. Correa and our captain made way in the following minutes for Herrera and Lemar. Atleti continued to dominate the game, creating chances and not conceding any. Morata was close to scoring our third goal, but was inches over the crossbar. Some 10 minutes before the end, Simeone made the last substitution of the game as Llorente made way for the goalscorer Joao Félix. Our team controlled possession until the final whistle and the game ultimately ended 2-0. Atleti are through to the Champions League last 16!
