Agreement with Bayern Munich over the transfer of Lucas Hernandez for the amount of his buyout clause
The Frenchman will play at the Bundesliga club from next summer.
Atlético de Madrid and Bayern Munich have reached an agreement over the transfer of Lucas Hernandez for the amount of his release clause.
Atlético de Madrid offered Lucas Hernandez the chance to sign a contract extension at our club, but the player has decided to continue his career in Germany.
The defender claimed it was a very hard decision to make.
“This is the most difficult and important decision I’ve ever had to make in my career. Atlético means a lot to me, because this is where I grew as a footballer and as a person. Saying ‘no’ to Atlético was extremely hard, but I’ve decided to seek a new challenge at Bayern Munich,” Lucas Hernandez said.
The Frenchman took the chance to thank our club.
“I want to thank everyone at Atlético. The officials, coaches, teammates and fans. These 12 years have been incredible and unforgettable. Atlético will always be in my heart,” the defender said.
The 23-year-old suffered a sprain in the medial side of his right knee in February and will require surgery.
Lucas Hernandez joined our Academy in 2007 and made his first team debut on Dec. 3, 2014 in L’Hospitalet. The defender has since played 110 games at our team (67 in LaLiga, 18 in the Copa del Rey, 16 in the Champions League, eight in the Europa League and one in the UEFA Super Cup). In these five seasons, he won the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2018, against Olympique Marseille and Real Madrid, respectively.
