MATCH PREVIEW

47 years later, we’ll face Cagliari once again

A magical European Cup knock-out tie against Cagliari is the only official time we’ve faced each other. At 8 p.m. CET, we’ll meet again.

For Atlético de Madrid, whenever Cagliari is mentioned it’s impossible not to remember the magical European Cup knock-out tie that took place nearly 48 years ago. This Wednesday, that tie will have a repeat when we play a friendly against Cagliari. But before that, let’s remember some epic Atlético history.

Our team, composed of legends like Luis Aragonés Rodri, Melo, Martínez Jayo, Calleja, Adelardo, Ufarte, Gárate, Iruteta, Alberto, Iglesias and Orozco faced a strong Cagliari which had Gigi Riva, Albertosi, Nicolai, Cera, Domenghini and Gori as their stars.

The first leg was played in Italy and Cagliari dominated the first half. Rodri, our keeper, had a great performance, but the match ended 2-1. Luis scored in the 77th minute to keep our hopes alive.

The return leg at the Manzanares (later named Vicente Calderón) was an epic night for all Atlético fans. Our stadium was packed and our fans pushed our team to a great 3-0 win, with Luis Aragonés scoring a brilliant hat-trick. That match was one to remember for all Atléticos and this Wednesday, we’ll cross paths with Cagliari once again.
