2022 starts with a Madrid derby as Atleti host Rayo Vallecano at 4.15pm CET on Sunday. The game will mark the end of the first half of the LaLiga campaign.
Our team will look to return to winning ways and dedicate the victory to the fans at the Wanda Metropolitano, where we’ll play for the first time in almost a month.
It’ll be no easy task, though, as Rayo Vallecano have enjoyed a great season so far. Despite achieving promotion last season, Andoni Iraola’s side are currently fourth in the standings, having picked up 30 points – one more than us. Moreoever, they’re enjoying a fantastic run of form, having earned three wins, a draw and a defeat in the last five LaLiga fixtures.
Atleti are unbeaten against Rayo Vallecano since the 2013/14 season, when we lost 2-1. Since then, we haven’t lost any of the last 10 matches against the Vallecas club. The last time we met, in February 2019, we won 1-0 thanks to a Griezmann goal.
It’ll be a tough game, but Atleti will look to kick off the win with an important derby win.
