Atlético de Madrid's 2018 year in review

The year's first win came in the Copa del Rey Last 16 against Lleida on Jan. 3. Our team earned a 4-0 win thanks to goals from Godín, Torres, Diego Costa and Griezmann. It was the Brazilian's first goal during his second spell at our club.
Happy Epihany! Simeone's men earned the year's first win at the Wanda Metropolitano thanks to a 2-0 victory over Getafe. Correa and Costa were the goalscorers.
Thanks to a 1-0 win over Eibar, we reached the LaLiga halfway line on Jan. 13 equaling our best ever defensive record from the 2015/16 season. We only conceded eight goals in 19 matches, with Oblak keeping 12 clean sheets in the process.
Before the cup game against Sevilla at the Wanda Metropolitano, our stadium held a minute of silence for former Atleti player Rubén Osvaldo 'Panadero' Díaz. May all the Atléticos who passed away in 2018 rest in peace.
One of the Atléticos who left us was Nacho 'Cholito' Barberà, player for the UD Alzira youth teams. Our team dedicated him a 1-0 win at Málaga. Griezmann dedicated him his goal.
With the win against Málaga, Simeone reached 150 LaLiga wins as our coach, with a victory rate of 63%. He improved the records of all other coaches with at least 150 LaLiga wins, surpassing Johan Cruyff's 59.67% record at FC Barcelona or that of legendary Atleti coach Helenio Herrera (55.71%).
On a spectacular night, Antoine Griezmann scored all four goals during a 4-0 win over Leganés.
On Mar. 4. at te Camp Nou, Gabi became our seventh ever player to reach 400 official games. A few days later, another Atleti legend and the player with the most games (553) for our club, Adelardo Rodríguez, presented Gabi with a commemorative plaque.
On Mar. 27, the Wanda Metropolitano hosted a game of the Spain National Teama for the first time. The Spaniards earned a spectacular 6-1 win over Argentina in which Diego Costa scored the first goal.
Paulo Futre was the ambassador for the Europa League quarter final between our club and CP, Paulo Futre. Futre, a legend of both clubs, received the tribute of the Wanda Metropolitano, during his first time at our new stadium. The Portuguese placed his plaque in the Walk of Legends that afternoon and during the game's half-time, was presented with a shirt with his name and number 10 by Enrique Cerezo.
The Wanda Metropolitano celebrated the club's 115th anniversary and the first Children's Day at our new stadium on Matchday 32. A mosaic that read "115 years with you" welcomed our team.
With his goal during a 3-1 win against Levante on Apr. 15, Fernando Torres became our fifth top scorer ever, with 127 goals in official games. He follows Luis Aragonés (172 goals), Escudero (169), Campos (146) and Gárate (136).
After knocking out Copenhagen, Lokomotiv Moscow and Sporting CP, our team faced another historic side in the Europa League semi-final: Arsenal. Our team earned a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium thanks to Griezmann's goal and Oblak's saves. In the return leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, a goal by Diego Costa sent us to the final.
On May 16 we played our third ever Europa League final, where we played Olympique Marseille in Lyon. Two goals by Antoine Griezmann and one by Gabi gave us the trophy.
It was our third Europa League trophy after the wins in 2010 and 2012! This time thanks to the 3-1 win against Olympique Marseille.
The European trophy was the perfect ending to Fernando Torres' career at our club. Torres and Gabi lifted the cup towards the Lyon sky.
The streets of Madrid turned red and white to celebrate the Europa League win. It proved a very successful season for our club, and our Women's team and the Academy sides who won trophies celebrated too. Our captains Gabi, Torres, Godín and Koke shared the cup with our fans at the Neptune Fountain.
The perfect farewell. The game against Eibar was Fernando Torres' last official match with the Atleti shirt. Our legendary striker scored two goals and wore the captain's armband.
During the match against Eibar, Jan Oblak certified his third straight Zamora trophy. Our keeper conceded just 22 goals in 37 matches, averaging 0.59 per game.
When the last game of the 2017718 season finished, Fernando Torres' tribute began. 'El Niño' had just played his final match for our team and our fans let him know how loved he was. The Wanda Metropolitano was packed for the occasion, as our legend remembered his journey from the Academy to the Europa League win in Lyon.
Oh captain, my captain! After six seasons as Atleti captain, 417 official games and six trophies, Gabriel Fernández Arenas 'Gabi' said farewell to our culb during an emotional press conference at the Wanda Metropolitano auditorium. His friends and family accompanied him on the special day, as well as teammates and Enrique Cerezo and Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, among others.
On July 15, Griezmann, Lucas and Lemar became the first ever players to be crowned as World Champions while playing for Atleti. They beat Croatia 4-2 in the final.
During his Atleti debut, Adán gave us the win in our first 2018-19 pre-season game, after saving three penalties and scoring one in a shootout against Arsenal. Spectacular!
Hello, old friend! Our legend Joao Miranda played for the first time at the Wanda Metropolitano during an International Champions Cup match against Inter Milan. Luiz Pereira presented him with a commemorative plaque to honour Miranda's 178 official games for Atleti. The Brazilian played four seasons at our club and won five trophies.
Our Europa League win allowed us to play the UEFA Super Cup on Aug. 15. We earned a 4-2 win against Real Madrid thanks to two goals by Costa and one from Saúl and Koke. Costa's first goal was scored after just 49 seconds, the fastest ever of any European final.
Super Champions! After our wins against Inter Milan in 2010 and Chelsea in 2012, our team once again won the UEFA Super Cup, this time in Tallinn against Real Madrid. Diego Costa was named MVP, and Godín lifted his first trophy as Atleti captain.
From legend to legend With the UEFA Super Cup win, Simeone earned his ninth trophy as Atleti coach, breaking the previous record from Luis Aragonés.
Koke reached 80 European games with Atleti during the UEFA Super Cup win, in which he also scored. He surpassed Gabi's record of 79 games, becoming our player with the most European matches ever.
Thanks to our UEFA Super Cup win, Valencia performed a guard of honour for our players before the first LaLiga match of the 2018/19 season.
On Aug. 25, during our official debut of the season at the Wanda Metropolitano, Griezmann, Lucas and Lemar shared their World Cup trophy with our fans.
After beating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 thanks to a Griezmann goal, our team celebrated the UEFA Super Cup win in fron of our fans at the Wanda Metropolitano. A spectacular Philips Lighting show of light, colour and sound accompanied our players as they walked on to the pitch.
Atleti legend Diego Forlán presented on Aug. 30 the 2018/19 Champions League final, which is to be played at the Wanda Metropolitano. Forlán played 198 games for our team and won two titles.
Antoine Griezmann was named MVP of the 2017-18 Europa League, in which he scored six goals and gave four assists.
Another Atlético who sadly left us in 2018 was Padre Daniel, who was a club member for 44 years. We paid him a minute of silence before the match against Huesca.
In October, we reached 123,000 club members. Over 57,000 of them are season ticket holders at the Wanda Metropolitano. The stadium's inauguration in 2017 and our team's fantastic performances helped us reach this spectacular number. Thank you very much for your incredible support!
Following our 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, Oblak reached 100 clean sheets with Atleti. He did so after just 178 games... Truly spectacular numbers for the Slovenian keeper. Incredible job, Jan!
During Athletic Club's visit to the Wanda Metropolitano, our legend Raúl García was presented with a commemorative plaque by Club President Enrique Cerezo, to honour his 329 official games with the Atleti shirt. 71 of these were European matches, which make him the third player with the most continental appearances for our club.
Injured but decisive. Diego Godín scored our third goal in a spectacular comeback against Athletic Club. Our team earned a 3-2 win thanks to our captain's stoppage time goal.
Ahead of our spectacular clash against Barcelona, during which our stadium broke its attendance record, we received our players with our biggest ever mosaic.
Another historic Atleti player visited us in 2018. Radamel Falcao played at the Wanda Metropolitano for the first time during our Champions League game against AS Monaco in November. He was presented a framed photograph of his time at our club by Adelardo and Godín.
With his two goals in our win against Valladolid, Griezmann became the non-Spanish player with the most LaLiga goals for Atleti (83). He broke Rubén Cano's previous record of 82 goals. Chapeau, monsieur Antoine!
On Dec. 22, we paid tribute to Gabi during our last game of the year at the Wanda Metropolitano. Our legend was accompanied by his former teammates, family, 150 Academy player and the whole Atleti family. See you soon, captain!
