Atlético de Madrid has reached an agreement with Antoine Griezmann for the extension of his contract for one more season. The French forward signed his new contract with our club, which now extends until June 30th, 2022. After signing his new contract, Griezmann said, "The first thing that I want to do is apologise to the people who misunderstood my statements. Maybe I expressed myself badly or someone wanted to make news where there weren’t any, but since I came, I have given my all for my club, my teammates and my coaching staff, and I’m very happy to live one more season with all of you."
The striker from Macon is clear about how he is going to thank the effort of the club and the support of the fans: "I will thank them all by giving my best on the pitch, as always." Now, the forward is thinking about charging batteries during his holidays and, on his return, prepare for the next campaign: "Now, I will be resting for a few days to recover and return with my teammates and the coaching staff to prepare the season in Los Ángeles de San Rafael, like every year."
Griezmann, who is 26, came to Atlético de Madrid in the 2014-15 season and made his debut in the Calderón by winning the Spanish Super Cup, assisting Mandzukic in the winning goal against Real Madrid (1-0) in the second leg. That campaign, the French forward played 53 games and scored 25 goals, 22 of them in LaLiga.
- 83 goals have been scored by Griezmann in 160 matches in his three seasons as an Atlético
In the 2015-16 season, Antoine played in 54 fixtures, scoring 32 goals, standing out for his performance in the Champions League, a competition in which he scored 7 goals in 13 games. His great performance that year, both with our club and with the French national team, with which he was a finalist in the European Championship, served him to win many awards as Best Player of LaLiga 2015-16 and Best Player of the Euro 2016. In addition, Griezmann was also a finalist in The Best FIFA Football Awards 2016.
And last season he was Atlético’s top scorer again with 26 goals in 53 matches, in addition to standing out as a passer, with 12 assists to his teammates. The French forward scored 6 goals in the Champions League.
It's great news for all the Atléticos because Antoine is one of the best players in the world, a different football player
For José Luis Pérez Caminero, Griezmann's renewal, "It’s great news because he is one of the best players in the world and all of us Atléticos should congratulate ourselves for counting with him. Antoine is a different football player, capable of changing a match, with spectacular qualities, a very complete player."
Caminero wanted to emphasize the differences that the French striker has compared to other big world players: "He is also a football player willing to sacrifice himself for the team when it’s needed and works on defensive tasks too, something that makes him different from the rest of the world’s greatest players."
