Fernando Torres signs his new contract
Our club has reached an agreement with Fernando Torres by which the forward from Madrid will play next season with Atlético de Madrid.
The striker from Fuenlabrada has signed his new contract with our club and has shown his satisfaction to continue defending the red and white shirt: "I’m delighted to continue at home, the only place where I ever wanted to be, and it has finally come true."
Our forward said that he was "Happy to be here, I've never had doubts about where I wanted to be during all this process in which we didn't know what was going to happen and, in the end, what matters is that I have achieved what I was waiting for."
Fernando Torres trained in our Academy, where he entered at 11 in our juveniles, standing out from the first moment and making the leap to the first team from the Youths in the 2000-01 season, when he made his debut against Leganés at the Vicente Calderón stadium on 27th May, 2001. From there, he established as a part of the first team, was promoted to the First Division, became the red and white leader, and he was called by the senior national team. After six full seasons in our club, Fernando Torres began a new stage in English football, first with Liverpool and then Chelsea, where he continued to show his quality and kept adding titles, as well as with the Spanish national team, with which he won two UEFA European Championships (2008-2012) and a World Cup in 2010. In the winter market of the 2014-15 season, Fernando Torres returned home packing the Vicente Calderón with red and white fans that welcomed him back. In this campaign and half, the forward from Fuenlabrada has scored 18 goals, exceeding the one-hundred-goal mark with Atlético’s shirt, and will seek to further increase his records with our team next season.
For José Luis Pérez Caminero this is "Great news for everyone, since Fernando is part of the family and all the Atléticos are delighted with the fact that he can continue with us. He knows the club perfectly and is a benchmark for all of his teammates. The players trained in our Academy have a model to follow and he always has good advice to give to them. He is a man with a tremendous experience, used to winning titles and competing at the highest level."
