Atlético de Madrid was clearly superior to Villarreal from the first minute but saw how the rival team won the three points with very little. Diego Pablo Simeone’s men sieged the goal of Andrés Fernández and had four clear chances in the first half, forcing the rival keeper to make some the same number of saves to shots taken by Correa, Saúl and a double one by Griezmann and Nico Gaitán.
After the interval, the same script, with a Villarreal that was pinned back and that only went out of their side in the last fifteen minutes of the game, when Escribá had made the changes in attack. Before, leading role for Andrés Fernández with a save to a shot by Nico Gaitán and with two measured shots from Filipe Luis and Torres. But the blow came in 82’, when Soriano scored the 0-1 in his team’s second chance to score in the whole match.
