Atletico Madrid returned to the Vicente Calderon after three weeks away from their home and they were back with a clear intention, to win and to stay in the fight for first place in the league. The meeting began with a touching moment of silence for the death of Maria de Villota.

Spurred on by the strength and courage of the driver, Atletico came out like a whirlwind and in 20 seconds were leading. Óliver Torres, who debuted in the starting lineup for Diego Pablo Simeone, recived the ball after phenomenal play from Koke. A dizzying start for Diego Pablo Simeone’s men. After the storm, the calm and common sense took over the game with Gabi and Tiago commanding in the Atletico midfield.

Betis, despite the initial blow tryied to get back in to the game and were compesed in their passing syle of football. They came close through Chuli but the Atleti defence managed to clear it for a corner. Atletico looked comfortable without the ball and Villa and Godin had chances to increase the lead but Sara kept them out.

Before the end of the first half, Diego Costa missed two one on ones against the Betis goalkeeper, which was the highlight of his team in the first half leaving it 1-0 to atletico at the break.

The second half began with the change forced by injury to Sara with Andersen coming on to replace him. The home side took control of the game and in ten minutes of pure football were able to double their lead thanks to David Villa after good work from Filipe on the wing. The 'Guaje' headed in a cross from Brazilian and not long after he was at it again, beating the substitute keeper to make it 3-0.

Betis looked stunned as a tsunami of red and white stripes passed over the at pace, by that time the Calderon s in fine voice as a party atmosphere broke out. Diego Pablo Simeone seized full control of the game and imposed their style of play throughout. In one of those lightning attacks, David Villa changed to provider, playing the ball to Diego Costa. The League's top scorer made no mistake in his third one on one.

The Calderon was buzzing but the party wasn’t over yet. In the 90th minute, Gabi got the goal of the night from outside the area. A goal that served to celebrate the ninth victory of the season and continued to certify that the Calderon is an impregnable fortress, five out of five in the Calderon is proof enough of that. Atletico Madrid remains unstoppable.
