Ujfalusi: “Or course we believe we can qualify for Champions”

“We have a very good squad and have come out of worse situation”

Tomas Ujfalusi was the player in charge of appearing before the media at Wednesday’s press conference. The Czech defender spoke about his teammates Agüero and Forlán, about the chances of qualifying for Champions League and the upcoming fixture against Athletic, which he considers to be “a strong opponent,” but believes that they can win with the support of their fans.

In the past few days, Agüero and Forlán have been in the spotlight due to interest from other clubs, but the Czech stated that “both of them are Atlético de Madrid players. We’ve spoken about how nobody is leaving, and they are reference points for us. In my opinion, I think that there’s no need to speak about it because they’re going to stay and play with Atlético.”

Ujfalusi believes that Kun and Forlán aren’t affected by the rumours. “I don’t think that the possible interest of other teams takes them out of the working dynamic. I don’t listen to the rumours from the media and I don’t think my teammate do, either. Every player knows their own situation and in this case it was clear that Diego and Kun were going to stay.”

Regarding the message left by Mr. Migual Ángel Gil Marín, Managing Director of the Club, during the meeting he held with the squad on Tuesday, the ‘rojiblanco’ defender said that “he wanted to see us and speak about the situation after the last match, which was very bad and in which we hardly had any scoring chances. We have 18 games left and we don’t have time to slip up. We all know that. Now, the most important thing is to regain our confidence and joy. We can do that by training hard and trying to attack the opposing goal because you can’t score goals without creating chances.”

The Atlético ‘17’ was categorical in speaking about the squad’s chances of reaching Champions spots. “The most important thins isn’t to believe, but to play well in order to accomplish this goal. We can’t take the pitch and play a match without creating chances. It’s one thing to believe and another to try and do all you can to win games. Obviously I think that we can make it to Champions. We have a very good team and we’ve done important things and have come out of worse situations. Sunday is the first match against Athletic and we have to come out hard. It’s not that we don’t now, as we try but you have bad days and bad luck. Everyone has to dig deep and bring out their best.”

Ujfalusi, has become an ‘expert’ at Atlético in going through similar situations, but can’t find an explanation. “we talk in the dressing room about why this always happens. We can’t do anything other than train to get back our confidence. I’m convinced that if we come out well that the fans will help us out on Sunday. We know that Athletic is a very strong team and we have to keep them out of our goal because they’re very big and use strategy well.”

To finish, the Czech made it very clear that what happened in Gijón was a mistake. It shouldn’t happen, but it can. Those are deciding moments. Everyone thought someone else was going to clear that ball and it passed through, but it can’t repeat itself.”
